Network Watch monitors your entire network and system, keeping you informed at all times about your security status.
Pros: A well organized interface is really a highlight of the application package. Areas where security vulnerabilities can occur are nicely grouped together. There are two main buttons. One checks for vulnerability on the items(s) chosen from the group of items and gives you a message if there are vulnerabilities. The other button fixes the found vulnerability on the click of the second button. Areas to watch for are so clearly demarcated that one can look for solutions for a group of problems by one set of parameter settings.
Just so you do not go wrong entirely settings before fixing vulnerabilities can be saved and restored as could be the new settings. The groups of vulnerabilities that are checked are internet vulnerabilities, DOS attacks, network settings, Antivirus and firewall settings and file associations.
Network and system settings are checked at all times and alerts user about any vulnerabilities. Windows services like the windows messenger service, remote registry services or automatic update are checked if they are running and if there are any vulnerabilities.
NULL sessions, host file redirections, Dead Gateway detector, SYN attack etc that can lead to denial of service attacks are checked so that such attacks can be prevented.
For the Internet Explorer settings related to trusted sites, trusted publishers, web content zone security settings are set for most efficient working and preventing vulnerabilities. The application has a small footprint as far as system resources are concerned.
Cons: It is very difficult to establish the effectiveness of these security settings. Testing will need to be really through simulating the problems against which the security tools are supposed to work. We could only assume such testing has been carried out by the developers/publishers.
Well organized, simple interface, at a glance kind of view of critical areas that need to be monitored add value to the application. Overall it is a certain 4 star candidate.
